In Concert at the Pine Street Saloon on April 21st, 2016
The Carolyn Sills Combo will be playing this Thursday night, April 21st at the Pine Street Saloon. Hailing from Santa Cruz, California, this band will kick their western swing music into high gear at 9 pm.
“With The Carolyn Sills Combo’s debut disc, fans of ‘proper country’ have some new heroes,” says Country Music People Magazine. A roots music group with a vintage sound older than its years, The Carolyn Sills Combo is breathing fresh life and heartfelt twang into the timeless sounds of post-war American music. Nominated for a 2016 Ameripolitan Award for Western Swing group, fans of classic country and western swing are falling in love with the band’s original songs, written and produced by Sills and her longtime guitarist and husband, Gerard Egan. The Carolyn Sills Combo has received 4 nominations from the Academy of Western Artists for their 2014 awards, including western swing group, western swing album, western swing song (Bad for You) and western swing female singer, all for their 2013 debut album release.
The cowboy loving duo attracted top Monterey Bay area players for their combo, featuring Charlie Joe Wallace on triple neck steel guitar, Jimmy Norris on drums and Sunshine Jackson on harmony vocals and percussion. Sills and Egan are heavily influenced by spaghetti western films as well as their vinyl record collection, citing a wide range of influences from Bob Wills, Patsy Cline and Merle Travis and Les Paul & Mary Ford. Word of their authentic live show is spreading quickly throughout Northern California, chock full of three part vocal harmonies, dueling guitar and steel instrumentals and tight arrangements of their own distinct brand of Americana. “This is real, swinging, juke box music,” says Sills. “We’re tipping our hats to the music that made us want to play, and hoping our original takes on these classic styles will keep the genres moving forward.’
The Carolyn Sills Combo’s debut is available through their website and iTunes, CD Baby and Amazon
“Carolyn Sills makes the West come alive with her stirring renditions of western swing, country blues, spaghetti westerns and more. Listening to her music is like stepping into an old saloon or smoke-filled jazz club. The bassist and singer performs old-timey originals with titles like “Bad for You” and “Loaded Gun,” poetic throwbacks to music that’s too rarely heard these days.” – Monterey County Weekly
“Seguing seamlessly between western swing, country, rockabilly, blues, and spaghetti western, the Combo’s debut album is tight, lively, and refreshing. Sills’ vocals sear, while guitarman Gerard Egan accents with inventive and toneful licks and solos. Charlie Joe Wallace adds stylish pedal steel.” – Vintage Guitar Magazine
